Olivia Amber.

Olivia Amber

International Athlete
U.S.A.

Olivia Amber is a professional mountain and ultra runner for The North Face. A former NCAA Division I All-American Nordic skier, she has podiumed at the U.S. National Long Distance Trail Championships and races including UTMB Monte Rosa, the Seven Sisters WMRA World Cup, and The Rut. Her mountain projects combine running and climbing, from big wall climbing on El Capitan in Yosemite to becoming the fourth person and first woman to complete Norman’s 13, a 105 mile linkup of thirteen 14,000 foot peaks in California’s Sierra with roughly 40,000 feet of vertical gain and technical climbing up to 5.9.

Olivia’s relationship with endurance extends beyond sport. She has lived with endometriosis for her entire adult life, undergoing multiple operations for stage 4 disease, and was diagnosed with cancer that was surgically removed all while in her 20s. Those experiences changed how she understood suffering. In the mountains, discomfort was something she could choose, push into, and sometimes find freedom in. Illness showed her the other side of suffering you don’t choose and can’t simply train your way through. Since then, Olivia has spoken on panels, podcasts, and mentors other young female athletes through Voice in Sport. She sees suffering as something that can connect us because no life is fully untouched by it. That idea also shapes how she thinks about climate change and how its effects reach all of us, but often fall hardest on communities with the least choice in whether or how they experience them, and that have often contributed the least to causing them.

For her, the Snowman Race is a chance to keep exploring a question she returns to often – what can suffering teach us about how we care for one another and the places we share?
